Actual Paddock #3 "Doom Metal"

This Actual Paddock we had the theme of doom metal, mostly focused in the stoner doom subgenre. I briefly touched on the kind of euphoric "ascending up a wave of light" kind of doom but would still like to revisit it specifically at a later date. I didn't get the chance to play any funeral doom, so I think I will actually have a couple of shows later on down the road touching on more specific subgenres. I used what is probably my favourite stoner metal album as the bookend for this playlist: Bongzilla's Gateway.

Bongzilla - Sunnshine Green

Khanate - Skin Coat
Boris and SUNN O))) - Etna

Death Grips - No Love (request)

Bongripper - LO (from SLOW)
OM - State of Non-Return

Swamp Dwellar (nz) - Incurable Illness

Belzebong - Bong Thrower
Telekenetic Yeti - Lightbearer
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Thumbsucker

Bongzilla - Stone a Pig

Background music: The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party Vol. 4
Recommended listening: Khanate - Khanate

Action Paddle #2 - Jimmy Tannock

For the second Action Paddle I brought on my friend Jimmy, not for an interview but just to gain an insight into his taste. Jimmy likes "real emo" so his side of the playlist was mostly that, while mine was mostly made up of post-hardcore that gradually less and less "post". We hardly talked about the music itself, mostly about fruit. We got a couple of listener submissions of emo songs for Jimmy to decry as real or fake emo, and they were "pretty real". Bookending the playlist this time was Giving Birth to Thunder by Indian Summer, with two songs chosen by Jimmy.

Indian Summer - Aren't You, Angel?

The Hated - Rubber Bullets
Refused - The Deadly Rhythm
Moss Icon - Cricketty Rise (Haverton Roads - Browns and Greens)
Head Wound City - Scraper
Rain - Worlds At War

Kowloon Walled City - Wrong Side of History
Heroin - Indecision
Chat Pile - Wicked Puppet Dance
At the Drive-In - Starslight

.44caliberloveletter - ...and these streets will forever belong to us (request)

Shellac - Spoke
Taqbir - Al-zuki Akbar
I Hate Sex - I Fucking Hate Sports
I Hate Myself - Song Two
Melt-Banana - Candy Gun
Dismemberment Plan - What Do You Want Me to Say?

Gonewithyou - Close My Eyes (request)

Carb on Carb (nz) - Mitimiti
Jets to Brazil - Chinatown
Title Fight - Lefty
How Get (nz) - Te Tai Pari
Hail The Sun - Anti-Eulogy (I Hope You Stay Dead)

Mandate (dn) - Warsaw (live)
Moss Icon - Hate In Me
Cell Rot - Sick Little Fuckers
The Locust - Who Wants A Dose Of The Clap?

Indian Summer - Woolworm

Actual Paddock #2 - "Freak Folk"

The second Actual Paddock's very loose theme was Freak Folk, and we dived into it headfirst with some of the giants of the scene. Thing quite quickly went South and I starting playing decidedly not freak folk songs, but we managed to get back on track by the end. I guess the theme was more "freak folk and the greater psychedelic folk movement", but we still managed to go outside of that by the end. Bookending the playlist this time was 2 songs from the first part of the monster primitive noise-folk masterpiece: OCS: 35 Reasons Why Life Goes on Without You and 18 Reasons to Love Your Hater to Death (AKA OCS 1).

OCS - Untitled 35

Vashti Bunyan - Winter Is Blue
Animal Collective - Baleen Sample
John Fahey - Knot's Berry Farm Molly

Joanna Newsom - Emily

Six Organs of Admittance - Spirits Abandoned
Neutral Milk Hotel - Avery Island / April 1st
Animal Collective - The Softest Voice

Tyrannosaurus Rex - The Seal Of Seasons
Gris - Sem
Aldous Harding (nz) - Stop your Tears
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Boxphones

Graham Lambkin - Jungle Blending
The Olivia Tremor Control - Black Foliage - Itself
Wet Marble - White Strawberries

OCS - Untitled 31

Recommended listening: John Fahey - The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party, Vol. 4

Action Paddle #1 - Harsh Noise Soft Coffee Organisers

Today was the first proper Action Paddle show, where I am joined by a guest of some variety, either as an interview or just to hang out. Today was a bit of both, I brought the mysterious, anonymous, string-pulling organisers of the esoteric Harsh Noise Soft Coffee into the studio to chat about what Harsh Noise Soft Coffee is, what it's for, and why it has a place in the Dunedin music scene. Each organiser brought in a selection of recordings from Dunedin experimental and noise groups to play, with a lot of them being their own bootleg recordings of live shows. Before they arrived I played some songs I've been enjoying recently that fit with the harsh noise vibe, bookending this week's playlist with two tracks from Burmese's 2004 ep Men.

Burmese - Preyer

Black Pus - FUCK IF I KNOW
Wolf Eyes - Village Oblivia

Crude (dn) - Slapper 2
Finance (dn) - The Dead ¢

Flies Inside The Sun (dn) - Absent and Erotic (live)
Charles Ives Singers - Lines of Flight 2023 (live)

The Dead C (dn) - All Tomorrow's Parties 2002 (live)
Hōhā (dn) - 4th Show Ever (live)

Adrenochrome Babies (dn) - Pearl Diver Set (live)
Alastair Galbraith (dn) - Head Down (live)

Burmese - Headmaster

Actual Paddock #1 - "Krautrock"

This was the first episode of the "Actual Paddock" side of the show, where I curate a playlist with a loose theme tying it together, and talk about the choices and what they mean to me. This time the theme was Krautrock (using my own very broad definition) and was broken up into blocks of more traditional kraut, noisy industrial kraut, kraut adjacent neo jazz, and a kraut / non kraut section. This time the playlist was bookended by two songs off of the latest album from one of my favourite krautrock bands, Hyperculte.

Hyperculte - Les malheurs du siécle

Thee Oh Sees - The Daily Heavy
Can - Spoon - Live 1972

Gnod - People
This Heat - Horizontal Hold

Sly and the Family Drone - Singularity 09: Every Knife In This House Is Mine
Von Spar - I

Sam Gendal & Sam Wilkes - THEEM AND VARIATIONS
Faust - It's A Bit Of A Pain

Hyperculte - Cabanes

Recommended listening: Gnod - JUST SAY NO TO THE PSYCHO RIGHT-WING CAPITALIST FASCIST INDUSTRIAL DEATH MACHINE

Action Paddle / Actual Paddock - Intro

Welcome! This episode was the introductory episode to my new show: Action Paddle / Actual Paddock - A show for fans of the weirdly extreme, and the extremely weird. Instead of following the structure of being either an Action Paddle or an Actual Paddock, this show was just me playing a wide range of music I liked to give listeners a general idea of the kind of thing that they could expect to hear each week. Because of this the playlist is pretty chaotic and so was the show overall, but we somehow got through it unscathed! Each week I start and end the playlist with two songs from the same album, and this week it was Songs About Fucking by Big Black.

Gordons (nz) - Future Shock
Curse of the Birthmark - alibis

Sly & The Family Drone - Dead Cat Chaos Magician
Hella - Republic of Rough and Ready

Sewage (dn) - Chew the Fat
Beings - Sun Greeted
Tom Waits - Midtown
