Kai for Octacan 2025
Kai for Octacan 2025, Presbyterian Support Otago’s major winter food drive, is holding their annual collection day just before the shortest day of the year on Thursday 19 June, as we look forward to Matariki – the Māori New Year, which is the time of year when harvest would traditionally have happened.
Help your community gather and secure food for those who are grappling with the impact of hardship by donating cans of food to help re-stock Dunedin’s busiest foodbank.
Matariki is important as it signifies our connection to food resources and the environments they can be found in. Five of the Matariki stars are connected to areas of our environment where food is harvested. This year the Octacan team will again be arranging donated cans into the shape of the Matariki cluster, and each star will represent a particular food group.
Getting involved is easy! Donate online at psotago.org.nz/octacan or start gathering cans and coins. Donation drop-offs can be made at the Family Works Foodbank, 407 Moray Place, Monday to Friday, 8.30am - 5pm or in the Lower Octagon 7.30am – 2pm, on Thursday 19 June 2025.

Dunedin Curtain Bank
Are you struggling to stay warm? Curtains make a significant difference to the warmth of a home; a third of all heat loss in an un-insulated home occurs through windows. Even double-glazed windows let out more heat than un-insulated walls. The Dunedin Curtain Bank is a community organization that up-cycles unwanted and unused curtains, lines them, and distributes them to those in need for just $5 per pair. Located at 174 Princes Street, they also accept donations of usable curtains for distribution.
Thursdays in Black
Thursdays in Black is a student-led movement working towards a world free from sexual violence, and runs events raising awareness and providing education around the issue of sexual violence on campus. Sexual violence is a significant problem on tertiary campuses, but a different reality is possible. All students and staff of the University of Otago are invited to stand together, and wear all black, some black, or a Thursdays in Black badge, every Thursday to show support and solidarity for survivors of sexual violence. The way to change statistics about sexual violence is to: see, acknowledge, understand and address these issues. If you would like to get more involved, message the Thursdays In Black Facebook page or email tibotago@gmail.com.
